PROGRAM

OVERVIEW

Tanbridge Academy offers a comprehensive Skill Development program for male and female students in kindergarten through nine. Students are provided the opportunity to follow their passion by participating in training sessions each week during regular school hours. Through this combination of a rigorous academic and dance program, aspiring students are taught the skills necessary to excel at AcroDance.

PHILOSOPHY

Our Skill Development program is open to any student who is passionate about their sport, regardless of their current skill level. Athletes are exposed to expert coaching and instruction that allows them to improve their abilities and experience success. Strong AcroDance training is the competitive edge that dancers are looking for; and is the future of dance studios in Canada and abroad.

INSTRUCTION

AcroDance is a style of Acrobatics used specifically for dancers. It is a genre of dance which incorporates elements of gymnastics, jazz, balancing, tumbling, and basic contortion. Students learn acrobatic tricks such as handstands, cartwheels, chest stands, elbow stands, walkovers, side and front aerials and tumbling. Trick movements are usually executed slowly to emphasize gracefulness, body lines and picturesque extension. AcroDance offers more depth and variety to your choreography and creates a much more versatile dancer. To master an AcroDance trick, students must develop a good foundation of strength and flexibility, thus emphasis is placed on extensive conditioning and stretch and strength training. When students are learning new tricks, the instructor utilizes professional spotting techniques; which is necessary to ensure safety and build confidence.

A beginner Acrobat generally takes about two years to develop a strong foundation before they start to really see the results of their hard work. Once a solid foundation is achieved, it is surprising to see how quickly students achieve their AcroDance tricks. With a steady and patient approach, students will achieve their AcroDance goals safely and effectively. Students in the AcroDance program participate in a combination of programs. This program includes high intensity gymnastic and dance elements, Kindergarten - Grade 3 are coached once per week. Grade 4-9 are coached 3 times a week (approx. 75 hours/year). Plus a strength and conditioning program.

Our Master Instructor is Melissa Klassen who is the Syllabus Creator of Acrobatique and is also an Examiner. As creator and director of the Acrobatique AcroDance Syllabus, the highly sought after Melissa Klassen is the “go to” expert in the field of AcroDance in Canada. Her modern techniques and fresh approach to Acrobatics have become a game changer in the dance industry. Strong AcroDance training is the competitive edge that dancers are looking for; and is the future of dance studios in Canada and abroad.

For over 20 years, Melissa has mentored under several of the industry’s top players to build her career as an expert in AcroDance, safe spotting practices, injury prevention, gymnastics, adjudication, and instructor mentorship. Melissa has worked with students and teachers from across Canada, the U.S, Mexico, Bahamas, the U.K, and Australia; her most recent position being with the prestigious Canadian performing arts school “The Young Canadians” in Calgary, Alberta where she served as the AcroDance Director for 10 years. Melissa is certified with the Canadian A.D.A.P.T (Jazz/Tap) Syllabus, is Level 3 certified with the N.C.C.P - Gymnastics division, Level 2 N.C.C.P Judging/Adjudicating Certification, Tumbling and Trampoline Level 2, Canadian Child Safety Certification, and has a diploma in Sport Management/ Administration with Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta.
